The American Dream

We talked about the American dream today in class with my 11th graders.  Amid their talk of the dream being about making money and having a nice house with the family, I had to physically stop my cynical side from saying the “American dream” is a lie that uses capitalism and material gain to support the “claim” that by the sheer virtue of working hard, one can obtain it…. I’m not convinced they would have understood my angst.
