Black Art

Writing a paper on the feminine in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing and watching different commentary interviews and came across this video:
I agree with Lee here, black art has taken a nose dive somewhere around or after the gangsta' rap era....Just saying. This then begs the question: Does black art have to be a social observation of the "black" condition or can it just be...tasteful art. We'll have to spend time defining "tasteful" and "art" and it gets all complex. BUT one thing we can agree on is that there needs to be stronger, more positive, less "cooned-up" black characters that are just as palatable as a Perry creation....if not more so. No more mammies, drug dealers, and tokens. It's time for characters just like me and my friends who go through very mundane "white people issues"...like dating...and selecting a career....and good ol' coming of age awkwardness.
