Sweet Auburn Festival

It’s the time of year when Atlanta hosts a wealth of festivals—each occurring one weekend after the other.  My brother and I spent the better half of our afternoon walking up and down Auburn Ave as I assisted him in his search for the holy grail of black soap and shea butter—and yes, he is as vain as he seems.  Braving the crowds and exploring the vendors’ goods—it was as close to a Moroccan bazaar I’ve ever been.
Auburn Ave is known as one of Atlanta’s “African American Streets” because of the history  surrounding the area and the local businesses that illustrate the struggle Black American’s endured to make a name for themselves during a time of Many Black American’s were asking, “Who are we as a people?”  The reclaiming of racial identity set the undertone of the festival and created a sense of community.
Overall, it was a good time:  with great food (funnel cakes and seafood), good music (a different street performer every block), and free admission to the APEX museum who could complain.  I hope you enjoy the pictures (the living statue) and look forward to more festivals to come this month:  http://www.atlantabuzz.com/program/eventsPerMonth.cfm?mt=5&yr=2011&tab=2
